Home of the Lavender Festival

Celebrated each July in Sequim, Washington

Lavender Festival

Originally developed as an agricultural community, the Dungeness Valley is breathtaking with its green, rolling fields and blue skies framing the crisp, white peaks of the Olympics in the distance. In recent years, however, Sequim’s consistently sunny weather, unusual for Western Washington, has drawn many new residents from urban areas elsewhere that want to enjoy the benefits of a less crowded and more friendly community.

Long time residents and newcomers alike can find plenty of activities year round to fit a variety of lifestyles and interests. Fishing, hiking, kayaking, boating, wildlife viewing, swimming, golfing, shopping, beachcombing and many other activities are all available to you in beautiful, sunny Sequim, Washington.

Lavender Festival

Sequim, Washington is well-known to airline pilots. They call it the “blue hole” – largely because this gorgeous neck of the woods is safely tucked behind the Olympic Mountains – famous for their beauty and glaciers – to the southwest, which protects it from extreme weather patterns.

Sequim (pronounced “S’Kwim”)  Washington , and the surrounding Sequim-Dungeness Valley, is located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the north coast of Washington State near the base of the Olympic Mountains. Sequim is about two hours away from the metropolitan cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia and is a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula and its numerous tourist attractions.

Sequim is famous throughout the Pacific Northwest for its low rainfall and sunny skies. Known as “Sunny Sequim” or “the Blue Hole”, Sequim lies in the rainshadow of the Olympic mountains, and boasts an average annual rainfall of less than 16 inches.

It’s a beautiful small town with a friendly atmosphere, and a great get-away from the urban areas for a day or two of shopping, hiking, biking, and meeting new friends!

John Wayne loved this area, and purchased and built the John Wayne Marina, which is a popular place for boating.

About Sequim:

 Start at the Beginning…

The Sequim-Dungeness area has a history of farmland – and although those days are gone, the ‘new farms” are replacing the dairies of yesteryear. (Read tidbits of Sequim history)

There are many small farms around the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, and each weekend during the spring, summer & fall, they offer their goods for sale at the downtown Farmer’s Market. Click here for some fun and interesting “Farm Tidbits“.

“Save Our Sequim”

The local citizens’ group “Save Our Sequim” is working to encourage the developers of a regional medication-assisted-treatment facility from locating in downtown Sequim next to Costco.

Earthquake Prep

In light of the earthquake in Japan, and the fact that the North Olympic Peninsula is located within the “Ring of Fire”, it is wise to be prepared in the event of a possible earthquake (or for any other unforeseen disaster, for that matter). Click here for steps in earthquake preparedness.

Click here for USGS’ website to watch where earthquakes are happening.

And don’t miss the Olympic Game Farm, where you can see not only our elk, but a myriad of other types of animals, as they range openly around the drive-through compound.
